3 Things to Know Before Traveling to a Third World Country

May 9, 2024 by Jaime

While the term third world country may immediately conjure up images of poverty and underdeveloped living conditions for many people, the truth is that third world countries can be one of the most exciting places to go to. In many cases, because they’re so underdeveloped, these places are full of natural beauty and rich in culture.

Also, you have the advantage of knowing that you’re going to a place that isn’t saturated with tourists. Because there’s less demand for these underdeveloped, and so-called “third world” destinations, you can have a more authentic experience than you would in a more mainstream destination.

However, there are some things you should know before setting out on your trip. Here are some of the most important things you should know before traveling to a third world country.

Research Before

Knowledge is power, and the more you research and get to know the destination you’re traveling to before you go, the more prepared you’ll be. Get to know some of the most dangerous areas, and which areas are safe with a strong police presence. Get to know some of the local customs and societal norms, so that you can avoid getting yourself in awkward or even dangerous situations.

If the primary language is one other than English, get to know a few phrases, as this will significantly enhance your experience. Being able to ask for basic directions, or order food by yourself is extremely handy.

Don’t Expect The Same As Home

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when traveling to another country is believing that everything is going to be the same as at home. However, third world countries lack the same infrastructure that you’re used to. That means something you take for granted like regular electricity or even paved roads may not be possible in your new destination.

Adjust your expectations and remember that you’re not at home. Third world countries aren’t the same as developed ones, and staying flexible will help you avoid frustration.

The smartest thing to do is to carry items on you that can help you manage these irregular situations. Bring a water bottle, a few extra batteries or even a solar charger, and always carry a first aid kit. Being as prepared as possible for rough conditions can make you feel more comfortable, and help you stay better prepared.

Respect Culture

Remember, some things that seem perfectly normal at home, may not be acceptable where you’re traveling to. From what you wear, to what you say and do, some things that are deemed acceptable at home could be considered inappropriate or downright offensive elsewhere.

Follow dress codes, and always ask for permission before photographing locals. Show respect for local customs and ceremonies, and when in doubt, ask a local for advice.

3 Tips For Traveling While Recovering From An Injury

April 17, 2024 by Jaime

If you have a big trip coming up but you’ve recently been injured, whether you slipped and fell at your senior living community or you had to have surgery for one reason or another, you’ll be glad to know that there are things you can do to ensure that you’re still able to travel even while you’re healing up.

To help you in figuring out the best course of action for you, here are three tips for traveling while recovering from an injury.

Get Help While In The Airport

If you’re going to be taking a plane as part of your travels, there is all kinds of help that you can get at the airport to ensure that you’re safely and comfortably able to make it around the airport and onto your flight. However, you may need to call the airport ahead of time to ensure that everything you’ll need will be available to you before you arrive.

At most airports, passengers can get services like wheelchairs, transportation through the airport, help through security and other screenings, and assistance with boarding the aircraft. So if these are services that you think you might need due to your injury and how it may be affecting your ability to handle everything on your way, make sure you find out how to get these services before you show up at the airport.

Plan For Things To Take You More Time

Regardless of where you’re traveling and what you might be doing during your trip, when you’re trying to get around with an injury that’s healing, things are automatically going to take you more time than they usually do.

Knowing this, you’ll want to schedule extra time for things into your itinerary. From getting ready to leave your house to getting to the airport, making your way your ground transportation, and everything else, try to build some buffer time into your day so that you’re not constantly stressed or chronically late.

Try Your Best To Pack Light

When you travel, you have to carry a lot of stuff with you. But when your body is injured, you may not be up for lugging a bunch of suitcases or heavy packs through an airport or along your route. So if you can manage it, try to pack light if you’re traveling while nursing an injury. This might mean not even bringing a carry-on on your plane and just checking your bags so that you can keep your hands free while making your way around the airport.

If you’re recovering from an injury but you have a trip scheduled, consider implementing the tips mentioned above to help you get to where you’re going without causing yourself more pain or discomfort.

3 Things To Do When You’re Having Heating Or Cooling Issues In Your Hotel Room

March 1, 2024 by Jaime

If you’re spending time in a hotel room as part of your travels, you’re going to want to make this room as comfortable as possible so that you can get the rest you need to enjoy your trip. However, if you enter your hotel room and you notice that it’s much too hot or far too cold for your comfort, there are a few things that you should do rather than just suffering through it.

To help you know what can be done in this situation, here are three things to do when you’re having heating or cooling issues in your hotel room.

Do Your Own Troubleshooting

As soon as you notice that something is amiss with the temperature in your hotel room, the first thing that you should do is see if you can troubleshoot the problem all on your own. The thermostat may have been set to a temperature that you don’t want. And if you can make the changes yourself, you can get the room to a comfortable temperature in no time.

In most hotel rooms, there is a thermostat or way that you can adjust the temperature a bit to keep yourself comfortable. However, you may not have a lot of control over this. Additionally, if the thermostat or the heating or cooling system isn’t functioning properly, you may not want to mess around with it too much on your own and risk making a bigger problem than you’re already dealing with.

Contact The Front Desk For Help

If you try to make adjustments to your room’s temperature and you’re simply not able to, either because you can’t find the thermostat or your changes don’t seem to be making a difference, the next step is to contact the front desk and ask them for some help.

In most cases, someone from the hotel or a professional heating and cooling expert will come take a look at what’s going on. In some situations, there might not be controls for the temperature in your room, so you may need to have the front desk make the changes for you.

Ask For A New Room

For the times where you need to use your room as it is at the present moment and you can’t wait around for the thermostat to get fixed or for the room to settle back into a comfortable temperature, you can always ask the hotel to change you to a different room. As long as a room is available, and you make this request in a civil way, there should be no problem putting you in a different room so that you’ll be more comfortable.

If you’re in a hotel room that’s having heating or cooling issues, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you know what you can do to fix this.

3 Tips For Keeping Yourself Safe When Visiting A New Place

March 1, 2024 by Jaime

When you’re visiting a new place, there are a few things that you’ll want to do or be aware of so that you can ensure that you’re able to keep yourself and your belongings safe. Because while it’s great to see new places and try new things, no one wants their vacation memories to be tainted by a bad experience that they could have avoided if they’d just spent more time protecting their safety.

To help you learn how this can be done, here are three tips for keeping yourself safe when visiting a new place.

Make A Plan For Emergencies

While you don’t want to spend all of your time preparing for your trip by thinking about every worst case scenario, if you plan for certain emergencies that have a higher likelihood of happening, you’ll know exactly what you want to do if and when something happens. The emergencies that you may want to plan for could include things like a fire in the building due to transformer failure or other unforeseen circumstances, possible natural disasters, and other threats to your safety.

In addition to making your own plan for what you’d do if you face an emergency, you’ll also want to make sure that your friends and family members back home are the first to be contacted if something goes wrong while on your trip.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

To best keep yourself safe when you’re in any new place, you should practice situational awareness. This means that you’re always aware of where you are and what’s in relation to you. This should include being aware of other people and being aware of things like traffic, exits, and places where you can get help if you need it.

As you stay aware of what’s going on around you, you’ll be better able to tell if something weird or suspicious is taking place. You can then know how to respond quickly and keep yourself and others out of danger as best you can.

Take Care With What You Eat And Drink

When you’re visiting a new place, especially a new country, you’ll want to be careful with what you eat and drink so that you don’t put your own body in danger of getting sick or hurt. Not only can this be uncomfortable for you, but if you’re sick and hurt, you can’t do as good of a job of taking care of yourself and being aware of your surroundings. You’ll also want to wash your hands regularly to avoid the same outcome.

If you’re going to be visiting a new place for the first time and want to make sure that you’re doing your best to keep yourself safe, consider implementing the tips mentioned above.

3 Things to Do Before Going on a Trip

February 16, 2024 by Jaime

Missing a critical step could lead to unnecessary stress and detract from the overall enjoyment of your trip. So, if you’re getting ready to travel, here are some important things you should remember to do first.

Secure Your Home

Chances are you have your fair share of belongings at home that you wouldn’t like to see stolen or destroyed while you’re gone. This is why it’s important that you secure your home while you’re gone. For some people, this might mean setting up a home security system, while for others they may hire a house sitter.

The idea is not to leave your home vulnerable for anyone to come and do as they please should they know you’re gone. Not only will securing your home protect your precious belongings, but it will also give you the peace of mind you need to enjoy your trip. When you’re stress-free on your travels, you’re that much more capable of living in the moment and enjoying your trip to the fullest.

Call Your Bank

If you’re traveling outside of the country, then you’re going to want to alert your bank. Many banks have a security block set in place where they will freeze your card as soon as they see unusual transactions outside of the norm. It’s as simple as calling and letting them know where you’ll be.

This will avoid unnecessary freezes on your account which aren’t just pesky when you’re trying to pay during your travels, but can actually be dangerous. If you don’t have access to funds this could be a serious problem. So plan ahead and ensure that your bank is on the same page.

Make a Packing List

There are some people who naturally fly by the seat of their pants in life. They go to the grocery store without a list, they do their Christmas shopping without a list, and they pack their bags for a vacation without a list. While this may seem perfectly acceptable, and maybe even a laid-back approach to travel, the truth is that it can cause a serious problem. You might forget something essential, and depending on where you’re traveling to it might not be so easy to replace what you forgot. Making a list ensures that you don’t forget a thing, and also avoids overpacking. When you adhere to a list you don’t risk packing unnecessary items that will only weigh you down.
