Must See Safari Wildlife: Kenya’s deadliest Predators

August 20, 2019 by Jaime

Are you planning a trip to Africa, or Kenya to be specific? If you are, brace yourself for some of the most incredible times of your life. Kenya is one of the leading destinations in East Africa, boasting spectacular sceneries, beautiful landscapes, and friendly people. It is also the one of the best places to watch different wild animals in their natural habitats. Among the hundreds of animal species in the country, some, like the lions, hyena, leopard, and cheetah, sit at the top of the food chain. It is a scene to behold, seeing these predators on safari in their natural habitat.

In this article, we’ll look into some of Kenya’s deadliest predators that you must see in your trip.

The Lion

Lions are commonly referred to as the ‘King of the Jungle’ although are not actually found in the jungle but rather on the grasslands of Afria and are strong and powerful. However, what you may not know is that they are not the best hunters. If anything, lions are lazy, and can’t keep up with the speed of their prey over distances. But don’t let that fool you. Lions are good at stalking.

Hunting is usually done by the female lions – that often move in highly coordinated pairs or groups for efficiency. But the male lions also offer a lending hand –, especially for the bigger prey. And thanks to their size, they are the only predators that try to catch larger prey like wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, and buffalo (and sometimes, elephant or hippo).

African wild dogs

The African wild dogs are arguably the deadliest hunters in the world; their lean frames and adorable large ears are deceptive – but these carnivores are no joke. In fact, their relentless and marauding nature has been a cause of friction with livestock communities, accounting to deaths that almost led to their extinction. These dogs move in packs of between 6-30 animals with the hunting prowess significantly increasing when the pack has more members. They have excellent stamina and hunt down prey including small and large wildebeest, impalas and so on.

Cheetah

As you would expect it, cheetahs are one of Kenya’s deadliest hunters – thanks to their speed. They are the fastest mammals on land and have a high hunting success. They stalk in wide open grasslands and charge towards their prey at speeds of around 60km/h. That’s usually too fast for an unlucky victim to escape.

Leopards

Leopards are way more successful than lions when it comes to hunting down prey. They are quiet and stealthy when approaching prey and will sneak up close before making their move. For their size, leopards are the most powerful of African cats and can pull a kill that’s more than half their weight up a tree to ward off other predators like hyenas and lions.

Spotted hyena

Hyenas are known to be excellent scavengers, but they hunt and kill their own prey about 90% of the times. Hyenas can also steal prey from almost all predators, including lions, leopards, and even cheetahs. However, they often don’t pull this stunt with adult male lions.

Gutter Cleaning & Maintenance Tips for Adelaide SA

August 1, 2019 by Jaime

If you are a house owner there probably came a time you asked yourself when the best time to clean your gutter was. Cleaning your gutter is very important to avoid the more costly option of repairing it. Your gutter will inevitably suffer major structural damages if it is left for a long time without being properly maintained or cleaned by yourself or professional gutter cleaning services.

When do I clean my gutters?

You will know it’s time to clean your gutters when you observe significant twig, dirt or debris build-up in your gutters. It is advisable that you should schedule a cleanup of your gutter at the end of every spring and fall season. This makes sure debris does not pile up putting too much weight on the gutter fasteners. This might lead them to pull away from the house.

How do I clean my Gutters?

Choosing how to clean your gutters depends on the layout of your home. Basically, all you will need is a strong and steady ladder, a pair of washing gloves and a hose. It should come as no surprise that cleaning your gutter can become a time-intensive project. You should, therefore, plan in advance.

How do I keep my gutter from getting clogged?

To reduce the chances of debris jamming up your downspouts and gutters you should consider installing gutter guards. While this might be might require a substantial sum of investment it will ultimately minimize the amounts you will spend on upkeep and maintenance. It is therefore advisable that you install gutter guards during your next gutter cleaning.

What damages can I expect from unmaintained gutters?

Damaging the foundation of your house

One of the primary functions of the gutter is to prevent water from eroding the soil around THE foundation of your house. If this occurs, it can result in an expensive foundation repair. Definitely, no one wants to incur these expensive costs, which can easily be prevented.

Basement flooding

Gutters prevent water from landing at the base of your home. This water, if allowed to land at the base can easily flow into your basement. This can eventually lead to other problems like the growth of mold and mildew. Your walls can also be exposed to moisture and fungal growth.

Mosquitos

If you have recently noticed mosquitos buzzing around your home, you should probably take a closer look at your gutters. Clogged gutters are the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos. Mosquitos breed in stagnant waters. Besides causing a nuisance through itchy bites mosquitos also spread disease like The West Nile Virus.

Cause destruction of driveways, sidewalks, and other finished surfaces

Clogged gutters allow water to land on and around these paved surfaces. This can lead to the soil around the paved areas being shifted or eroded. This will eventually lead you to spend extra on repairs of these paved areas.

Conclusion

To avoid the extra costs that will arise due to the destruction caused by clogged gutters and downspouts you should make sure that you clean the gutters regularly.

Essential Accessories To Buy on a Fishing Supplies and Tackle Website

July 30, 2019 by Jaime

2bdry5qy

Fishing is an excellent recreational activity and one of the best ways to spend free time with friends or family. However, before you head out to a lake, river or even to sea, you will need to purchase some gears and accessories.

For those that are new to fishing, this aspect of the process can be quite overwhelming especially because you have limited knowledge of the things to buy. One smart move is to check the Pro Fishing Gear Reviews Website for such information.

Below you will find a list of most of the supplies you will need to purchase. This way, you will know the things to add to your cart when you visit a fishing accessories website or a regular brick and mortar shop.

Rod and Reel: Rods are flexible slender poles typically made from graphite or fiberglass material. It is used for casting the line further into the water. Generally, fishing rods are meant to be strong and durable, responsive and flexible. Ideally, a rod is expected to be around 11.8 inches long, but the size may vary based on age and experience of the user. Your choice here depends largely on the type of fish you are targeting

The reel is attached to a rod and it helps you to wind the line and draw your catch in. Reels are expected to be lightweight and convenient to handle. There are various types and your choice depends on the type of fishing you will be doing.

Fishing Line: This is another must-have gear. Most reels usually come with a roll or two of line. However, it is advisable that you bring extras too. It isn’t uncommon for lines to break or get tangled as your fish. An extra line will come in handy in such situations. Lines typically have different weights, strength, cast ability, visibility, and elasticity depending on the type of fish you intend to catch. You can read this article as a guide for choosing the right line.

Hooks: You will also need to stock up on some hooks as well. They are several types and sizes and you will need to buy an assortment of options if you want to catch fish of varying sizes. Hook sizes range from 32 which is the smallest size to 19/0 which is the largest.

Bait: The Bait is attached to the end of a line and it attracts fish. Live bait is the most recommended option although different fishes may be attracted to various types of food which means other bait options might be required as well. Minnow and worms are the most commonly used live baits for freshwater fishes.

Lures: A lure is an artificial bait made to mimic live baits. Most anglers carry different types of plastic lures in their tackle box to be used when they run out of live bait. The type of fish you are targeting as well as fishing conditions determine the kind of lure to be used. For example, a light-colored lure is ideal for fishing in clear waters on bright sunny days. Conversely, the dark-colored ones are typically recommended for angling in murky waters or on dark days. Similarly, plastic lures are more effective for catching bass.

Bobbers or floaters: Floaters help to keep your bait as close to the surface as possible. It also shows you when a fish bites your bait which is the signal to start reeling in a catch. Traditional boobers are made from cork with a stick that is tied to the line.

Sinkers: Your kit is incomplete without a sinker. A sinker is required to stabilize your hook and baits since they are lightweight. They are traditionally made from lead but there are also steel, bismuth, tungsten, and brass sinkers as well. Weights may also vary depending on how deep you want your hook to sink. It is recommended that you carry extra sinkers since you are likely to lose them especially if you will be fishing for a long time.

Swivels: Lures and baits tend to make lines spin until it gets tangled and twisted. One simple way to prevent this is to use a connecting tool called a swivel that goes between the line and bait. This makes the bait spin freely without affecting the line. They are inexpensive so you should get good quality ones.

Needle Nose Pliers and a Line cutter: While these are not directly required for angling, they are vital accessories you should always carry with you always. A needle nose plier is useful for removing hooks from your catch easily. A line cutter is also required for setting up a new line. A sharp handy knife is a possible alternative to a line cutter.

Tacklebox: A tackle box is a small box where you can keep all your fishing accessories like hooks, sinkers, and so on. It’s a simple way to keep all your gear organized and easy to carry. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. A small box that can fit in a bag is perfect for simple bank fishing. You might need a bigger box if you intend to do some pro-level angling.

Conclusion

Other notable but non-compulsory mentions include a medical kit box or first aid box to treat small injuries, sunglasses and sun sprays. Having the right gear is not only essential for your angling success, but it will also affect how much you will enjoy the experience. Hence, you should ensure that you stock up on good quality accessories before your trip.

Fuel Saving Tips – How to Cut Costs When Driving

July 27, 2019 by Jaime

Buying the cheapest fuel is the easiest way you can cut fuel costs. But there are other things you can certainly do to get the most mileage out of your tank.

Get periodic maintenance and checkups

To avoid hiccups on the road and ensure your car’s roadworthiness, make sure to get your car serviced on time to maintain its engine efficiency. You will save fuel this ways unless you intend to use an electric car that is guaranteed to run with no fuel needed.

Watch the aerodynamics

Wind resistance is sure to increase your fuel consumption. So, make sure you keep your windows closed when driving at high speeds and ditch the roof racks when not in use. Getting rid of the roof rack and cargo carrier can help you save a lot of fuel.

Slow down your driving

Dropping your speed from 80 mph to 70 mph can help you save more on fuel, by 25%. If you find yourself on smaller roads, try to slow down to help save you more on fuel.

Keep tabs on your driving

Stop accelerating hard, braking hard, accelerating hard again, and then braking for the next speed bump. This kind of driving will use up a lot of fuel. So, try to drive along at a steady speed instead.

Practise sensible driving

Make it a practice to drive sensibly. Read the road ahead of you. Anticipate the actions of other drivers as well as any potential road hazards. The less braking and accelerating you do, the less fuel consumed. You can, for instance, drive slowly in heavy traffic, and do not drive fast to catch up only to brake hard later on.

Don’t rev when not necessary

Never allow your revs to reach 3,000 per minute before you change gear. It is more efficient to change gear at 2,500 if you use petrol and 2,000 if you have a diesel engine. You can also use high gears like fifth and sixth gears.

Keep your tyres properly inflated

Well-maintained tyres are vital for safe and fuel-efficient driving. So, check your tyre pressure on a regular basis. An adequately inflated tyre can improve fuel consumption by 2%.

Reduce the weight inside your car

The lighter your vehicle, the less fuel it will consume, so do not drive around with unnecessary stuff in your boot, except if you are on a road trip.

Drive al fresco

Air-conditioning uses fuel, especially at very low speeds. If it is a sweltering day, use the air conditioning for high-speed drives, but you can always drive al fresco around town to save on fuel.

Change your car

Obviously, when your vehicle is starting to cost you more than you expected, it is time to ditch the car altogether and/or reduce your vehicle use. You can carpool with friends, walk, cycle, or use public transport for short trips.

Decide whether or not you really need a car, and make sure you know exactly how much various cars cost to run.
